Port users survey 2024
* THIS SURVEY IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO TOOK THE TIME TO RESPOND.*
Kia ora koutou,
As part of our annual planning and evaluation, we wanted to hear from people who use our Port services.
Thank you very much for your feedback and the information provided through the recent port survey.
We’re pleased to hear that the majority of respondents are enjoying the new slipway and shed. It’s also encouraging to receive positive comments about the floating pontoons and how well they are liked. As some of you noted, we are fortunate to have skilled tradespeople and support services available locally for boats requiring maintenance. A busy slipway will also be beneficial to our local engineering and supporting industries.
We particularly appreciated the positive feedback on the efforts of our port team, especially regarding dredging operations, which are often carried out in challenging conditions.
We have taken note of the concerns raised about communication, particularly in relation to port management.

Looking Ahead
We are currently in the final stages of securing additional funding to upgrade the Blaketown side of the lagoon. Once funding is confirmed, we intend to go to market to engage a contractor to remove the old, dilapidated Blaketown pens and replace them with a large floating pontoon system.
We also plan to upgrade the section of the wharf where the Fellowship currently resides, transforming it into a heavy-loading wharf capable of supporting a small crane. The plans include the construction of toilet and washing facilities for port users.
In addition, we are developing a marketing plan and supporting material to help attract more boat owners to use the slipway.
Council continues to work toward upgrading the overall port facility with the goal of restoring it to a profitable operation that no longer relies on ratepayer funding.
Our port is also recognised as a critical piece of infrastructure in the event of an Alpine Fault event, providing an essential lifeline for the delivery of bulk fuel, food, and other necessities by sea. It is vital that our local industries can rely on the port to continue exporting products from the region when road and rail transport are not viable.
Spread the Word
Word of mouth is one of the most effective ways to promote our facilities and services. As you observe ongoing improvements around the port, we encourage you to share the progress with your networks—friends, colleagues, and fellow mariners.
Once funding for the next stage of development is confirmed, I will be in touch to develop a construction work plan that minimises disruption for port users.
If you have further comment or suggestions regarding the Port Operation or Facilities please do not hesitate to contact myself or Paddy Blanchfield at the council offices.
Thank you again for your honest and detailed feedback. Below are pie charts capturing the questions/feedback
Ngā mihi,
