πŸ€” So… what does Council actually do?

You might be surprised by how much Council does! Here are just some of the things happening behind the scenes to help make our Grey District a great place to live.

πŸ—‘οΈ Where does your rubbish go?

Ever wondered where your rubbish ends up after the truck takes it away? Our rubbish trucks head to McLean’s Pit Landfill near RΕ«nanga. Recycling more helps reduce the amount of rubbish we bury — and can help keep costs down too!

🚻 Who keeps the public toilets stocked?

Yep… Council! 🧻 We help keep public toilets clean, stocked with toilet paper and soap, and ready for you to use.

πŸ› Who keeps our playgrounds awesome?

Council helps look after playgrounds around the district, working alongside volunteers and local communities. Dixon Park is one example, with local people helping bring its refurbishment to life.

🏊 Ready, set, SPLASH!

Love the pool? 🏊 Council runs the swimming pool too! It’s also a place where some local students get their first job as lifeguards or swim school instructors.

πŸ“š More than just books!

The Greymouth Library team does much more than help you find a good book. πŸ“– They help people with technology, run school holiday programmes and create opportunities for the community to learn and connect.

πŸ’§ What happens when you turn on the tap?

Council supplies the water that comes out of your tap — and we treat it first to remove bugs that could make you sick.

And what happens when you flush? 🚽 Your wastewater travels to treatment plants. One important rule: wet wipes do NOT belong down the toilet! They can block pipes and create a very yucky job for someone to fix. 🀒

πŸš— Who looks after the roads?

Not every road has the same boss! The Government looks after the main roads between towns, while Council looks after local roads around our communities.

πŸŽ„ Who helps make community events happen?

Council helps organise and support events throughout the district — including one very special annual event… the Christmas Parade! πŸŽ…

🐢 Who looks after all those doggos?

If you have a dog, it needs a Council registration tag on its collar. πŸ• Registration fees help Council manage dogs in our community, including helping reunite lost dogs with their owners.

🏠 Want to build something?

Before a new house or building goes up, there are some important rules to follow. Council building inspectors check that buildings are being constructed safely and correctly.

These are just some of the things Council does every day. So, if YOU were Mayor for a Day, what would you change, improve, protect or create in the Grey District?
