Runanga Kōtare Domain Redevelopment

The Kōtare Domain redevelopment aims to transform the area into a space for the public to enjoy. The domain will offer a variety of outdoor activities for play and exploration.

Community Collaboration

Runanga Village People (RVP), a local community group, are leading the redevelopment of Kōtare Domain with support from Grey District Council. The council provides expertise, compliance input, and approval for the expenditure of funding.

The Runanga Village People (RVP) meet monthly, encouraging community inclusion and regular discussions on community events and projects. The Kōtare Domain Redevelopment is a central focus of these meetings, providing a platform for Grey District staff and broader residents of the Grey District Community to participate and contribute.

Stage One is complete!

The master plan has the Domain defined as zones, aiding in better area management, setting priorities, identifying ideas, and addressing significant issues (see document 'Runanga Domain Zones').

The first stage of the redevelopment focuses on several aspects:

  • Inspect the existing drains and if required repair under the existing GDC maintenance budget, improve all drainage around the area. - Inspection completed
  • Restrict vehicle access: through use of fencing and large stones. - Large stones installed
  • Gardens: Arranged into zones for construction and planting. - Heavy earthmoving completed and landscaped
  • Pathways: to provide easy travel through sections of the Domain. - First phase of new accessible pathways has been placed.
  • Tennis Court upgrade: clear tennis court surface and add 'no mow' border. - Still to be completed
  • Dog Park: Site Fenced, seating, obstacles and features to be installed.

See 'Stage One Works' under documents.

Background

RVP, a highly engaged community group, initiated the project and sought assistance and funding from Council. In August 2022, Grey District Council accepted Tranche 1 of The Government’s Better Off Funding, and a portion of this funding ($180,000) was approved for the redevelopment of Kōtare Domain. Since funding was confirmed, local businesses and individuals have also contributed.

GDC are working closely with RVP and Iwi to develop compliant and easily maintainable objectives for the domain. Plans will be reviewed, workmanship observed, and completed works inspected to ensure they meet required standards, involving suitably qualified individuals where necessary (e.g., engineers, play equipment inspectors, etc.).

Stage 1: Kōtare Domain Development Zones 4 and 13

Contouring the Land & improving drainage

The development of Kōtare Domain in Runanga is coming along nicely, with Stage 1 work under way.

Darryl and the team from Fairhall Agricultural Services have completed levelling and sculpting the land to improve drainage and prepare for the development of the dog park.

Weed matting has been placed on steep areas to reduce the chance of sediment run off, and lots of new plants will go in in a series of planting days coming up.

Fencing for the dog park has been completed and the community will add items for the dogs enjoyment.

We're excited to see this project come to life and can't wait to share further updates soon. Thanks so much to the Runanga Village People, Darryl and his team and all the great Council Staff who are getting in and getting the job done.

Stage 1: Zone 4 & 13 Dog Park fencing commences

Its very exciting to see the grass getting established and the dog park play area being completed.
